Wayne Gretzky was born to Walter Gretzky and Phyllis Leone, in Brantford, Ontario, on January 26, 1961. Wayne's love of the game began from a backyard rink in Brantford when he was little older than two years. Walter started coaching Wayne, his brothers, and their friends on the backyard rink from a very young age. Wayne picked up the game fast and scored 378 goals from 139 assists with the Brantford Nadrofsky Steelers by the age of 10. His game garnered media attention by 1971, and by 1974, Gretzky had scored over 1,000 goals. This was the beginning of an illustrious career that lasted 21 years. 

  • In 1978, Gretzky began his professional career with the World Hockey Association (WHA) team Indianapolis Racers. He was later moved to the Edmonton Oilers when WHA was dissolved.
  • In 1979-80, Gretzky scored 51 goals and 86 assists with 137 total points in his first NHL season.
  • In 1980-81, he was the first player in the history of the NHL to score an average of more than two points in a game.
  • In 1981-82, he scored 92 goals, 120 assists, with 212 total points.
